The Empyrean Series Raises Its Stakes

The third installment in Rebecca Yarros's Empyrean series arrives with the momentum of a franchise that has already proven its audience is enormous and loyal. Onyx Storm picks up the war-and-dragon-riders plot established in the first two books and pushes it further outward, expanding the world beyond Navarre's borders and complicating the political stakes that had, until now, stayed relatively contained.

Yarros's core strengths carry over from the earlier books: fast pacing, a willingness to put her characters through genuine physical and emotional damage, and an unusually tactile approach to world-building, the mechanics of dragon-bonding and battle magic are worked out with real consistency. The romance subplot, which drove much of the earlier books' popularity, takes a slightly smaller share of the page count here in favor of plot and world expansion, a trade-off that will suit some readers better than others.

As with the rest of the series, the prose favors momentum over precision, and readers coming to the genre expecting literary density will find something closer to a well-engineered thrill ride. Within the romantasy genre it helped popularize, though, the book delivers on its own terms and continues to justify the series' scale.
